A complete winner of an album

I was never a fan of Barbra Streisand, as I found much of her singing very overblown and pretentious. One day, I was listening to the radio, and I heard a fine version of Michel Legrand’s beautiful “You Must Believe In Spring”. I got a pen and paper and waited to note down the name of this new, exciting singer. It was the 66 year old Barbra Streisand.
So I swallowed my prejudice and plumped for the double CD. I don’t know if the quartet versions are the same recordings as the orchestral arrangements with the orchestra stripped out, and, frankly, I don’t care. They’re both some of the most beautiful recordings of old favourite songs that I have heard in some time.
What there is on this album is a gentleness and tenderness that I imagine very few people could achieve. Not a duff note is sung, even where the voice inevitably shows a little roughness (and it is very little indeed). Particularly beautiful is the Bergman song “Where Do You Start?”, revived by Tony Bennett on “The Art Of Romance” in 2004, and beautifully done here by Miss Streisand. Other songs have also been done before by Bennett, and are done just as beautifully here: “The Gentle Rain” and “A Time For Love”, being two beautiful examples. “A Time For Love” may well be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and this may well be the best version – not an easy feat.
Highly recommended, and may well turn me into a fan of this lady – something I never thought I would say. If you are a Streisand fan, I’m sure you’ll love this anyway (and hate this review). But if you’ve ever been put off by her grandstanding, give this one a try. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
Disapointed

The CD is really well crafted with tremendous Vocals by Barbra and the quartet/orchestra well orchestrated. Unfortunately the tracks are all rather slow. I would have preferred a bit more of a mix, after all Barbra has got a tremendous range.
Miss Striesand obviously needs the money

Delux version is not worth the money. All you get is one extra track on disc one and the the same songs on disc two but with a different orcestration. Obviously She’s a little hard up, must be the recesion?????
Excellent

Choice of material is very good, combination of Dianna Krall & Barbra Streisand is very good – thoroughly enjoyable.
Disappointed

I think Barbra is the greatest female single in the world and have been eagerly awaiting her new album – what a disappointment. The album has no variety as all the songs sound the same. Dont get me wrong I love Barbra singing ballads but this was too much of a good thing, I nearly fell asleep listening to it. I have all her CDs and play them all the time and never tire of them but i was tired of the CD after I played it once and will not be playing it again. I am listening to the music from Yentl as I write this and enjoying every moment.
